Ko-do Ryu Karate Renmei is dedicated to exploring and upholding Karate, Kobudo, Kung Fu, and Zen philosophy. Led by Nathan J. Johnson, we research kata’s practical roots, preserve traditional martial arts techniques, and promote a disciplined, mindful path through training and scholarship.
Ko-do Ryu (pronounced "Koh-doh Ryoo") is a traditional philosophy and practice that embodies the "Old School Way," rooted in the Japanese concepts of:
"Ko" (古), meaning "ancient" or "traditional,"
"Do" (道), meaning "the way" or "path," and
"Ryu" (流), meaning "style" or "school."
Nathan J. Johnson, with over 50 years in martial arts, leads Ko-do Ryu. A 5th Dan in Karate and 4th Degree Black Sash in Wing Chun, he was influenced, in-person by legends Mitsusuke Harada (Shotokan) and Ip Chun (Wing Chun). His seven years in a Buddhist monastery shape our Zen approach.
Tom Maxwell, Chief Instructor and Bunkai expert, leads the hands-on, practical application of Nathan's research and extends it with his own practical knowledge.
Gary McGlone, 5th Dan and Menkyo, is founder and senior instructor for Ko-do Ryu Europe, based in Mons, Belgium.
Ko-do Ryu emerged from Nathan’s journey across karate, kobudo, and kung fu traditions. Influenced by Okinawan Shuri-te and Naha-te kata (like Sanchin), kobudo weapons (like the sai), and Southern Chinese Wing Chun, it evolved through decades of practice and seminars in the UK, US, and Europe, rooted in Zen philosophy.
Ko-do Ryu encourages practitioners to explore the practical and historical roots of kata. Nathan’s research reveals kata as tools for grappling, weapons, and control—not just sport—preserving their original intent. We promote a holistic practice, uniting body and mind, inspired by Buddhist principles.
